Appalachian Sedge

Carex appalachica

Appalachian Sedge (Carex appalachica) is a groundcover with grassy foliage. They prefer mesic to dry soil in shade to part shade where they grow to 1 foot tall. Colonies form as the plants mature, making them a good choice for groundcovers on dry, shaded banks. Companion plants include Big-Leaved Aster (Eurybia macrophylla) and Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium reptans).

Maintenance

From mid-summer to fall, rust and smut may affect the appearance of Appalachian Sedge. In late winter, cut the dead foliage back to 2 inches.
