Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a seasonal interest plant with red blooms from mid-summer into early fall. They prefer wet to moist soils in sun to part sun but can tolerate some shade, growing up to 4 feet tall. They can tolerate short periods of up to 12 inches of standing water, making them great for planting in wet basins. Companion plants include Common Rush (Juncus effusus) and Southern Blue Flag Iris (Iris virginica var. shrevei).
Maintenance
While individual plants are relatively short-lived, plants may persist if allowed to self-seed. Otherwise, plan to install additional plants every few years. For best results, grow in moist, fertile soil.
