Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa) is a structural plant with 3 foot tall, golden panicles when the grass goes to seed in June. The panicles provide interest for several months. They don't like to dry out, preferring moist soils in part sun conditions. This makes them a good choice for taller, grassy textures for slopes. Companion plants include Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense) and Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica).
Maintenance
In late winter, cut the dead foliage back to 2 inches. If self-seeding is an issue, deadhead in August.
