American Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a structural shrub with yellow blooms in late fall, showy fall foliage, and bird-attracting fruit. They prefer mesic soil in sun to part sun, growing up to 20 feet tall. They are a good choice for bioretention slopes. Species for underplanting include Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pennsylvanica) and Big-leaved Aster (Eurybia macrophylla).
Maintenance
Many insects feed on the foliage, which can be an aesthetic concern in the most severe cases. Leaf spot and powdery mildew are occasional issues. In late winter, trim to shape and prune out any dead or damaged wood.
